Jahangirnagar University Abolishes Dependant Quota Following Student Protests

Jahangirnagar University (JU) has officially abolished the Dependant quota in response to ongoing student protests. The decision was announced by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, at 12:15 AM on February 5, 2025.

Students at Jahangirnagar University had been protesting against the dependent quota, calling for its removal. The administration took their concerns into account and decided to eliminate the quota to ensure a fair and merit-based admission process.

The dependent quota was a special reservation policy that allowed relatives of university employees to receive preferential treatment in the admission process. Many students argued that this system was unfair and compromised the integrity of merit-based admissions.
